The mystery of the fan

So we got this ceiling fan for our new place. It didn't come with a remote and was positioned directly above the bed. A remote seemed like a good idea, so one was purchased and the handyman who was installing the new fan also installed the remote. Then the fun started.

There is also a ceiling fan in the room below the bedroom and it also has a remote. It was discovered that when the remote was used in the bedroom, the fan in the living room started to move. A couple of times I walked downstairs in the morning to find the living room fan spinning furiously and fully lit up. The cat appreciated the breeze, but was a bit grumpy from having the light on all night. We learned to use the wall switch to shut off the living room fan and that stopped that.

Now, it seems that maybe someone else in the building might also have the same remote for their fan because our fan may be off when we go to sleep, but whipping up a stiff breeze when we wake up. Or vice versa. We may go to sleep with the fan on to keep the air moving and wake up sweaty because it has turned off sometime during the night. Another remote at our neighbor's condo, a bad fan, or a poltergeist messing with us? We never had these problems on the mainland!
